Ferraria macrochlamys subsp. macrochlamys is a deciduous perennial growing from a disc-shaped corm to heights around 40 cm.
The subspecies distribution is only in the Northern Cape from around Garies to Steinkopf.
The habitat is Namaqua Klipkoppe (stone heads) where the plants grow in sandy shale or clayey soils. There are three subspecies, all endemic to Namaqualand but the distributions of the other two also cross the Western Cape border in the far northwest. Subsp. macrochlamys is not considered to be threatened in its habitat early in the twenty first century (Le Roux, et al, 2005; iNaturalist; http://redlist.sanbi.org).
