Erica lanata, commonly known as woolly heath, is an erect shrublet that reaches heights from 30 cm to 1 m. Numerous short branchlets are grown on which the flowers appear.

The species is in the Eriodesma section of the Erica genus according to Baker and Oliver, among the Woolly-headed Heaths according to Manning and Helme.

The species distribution is in the east of the Western Cape from around George or slightly more westerly to the west of the Eastern Cape as far as Humansdorp. The photo was taken on a mountain slope near the farm Spookberg in the Langkloof.

The habitat is montane, moist fynbos in fairly high rainfall terrain. The habitat population is deemed of least concern early in the twenty first century (Manning and Helme, 2024; Moriarty, 1997; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; Baker and Oliver, 1967; iNaturalist; JSTOR; http://redlist.sanbi.org).
