Kalanchoe sexangularis green leaves in shade

The opposite leaves of Kalanchoe sexangularis have short fleshy stalks. Leaf shape is broadly ovate, folding in along the midrib and more or less recurving lengthwise. The leaf margins are variably scalloped or toothed.

Leaves are shiny, thickly succulent, their colouring dependent on the amount of direct sun they receive: crimson or ruby red in exposed places with full sun, dark green as here where they grow in shade.

An earlier botanical name of this species was K. rubinea, referring to leaf colour (Smith and Crouch, 2009; Germishuizen and Fabian, 1982).
