Lithops herrei dry capsules by the leaves

Lithops herrei produces yellow mesemb-like flowers during or near the winter months from the slits in the leaf bodies. The flowers do not open fully or flatly, the about one whorl of round-tipped petals angle out in a wide bowl. A cone to a column of white-filamented and yellow-anthered stamens are erect in the flower centre. Flower diameter is about 2 cm. Lithops flowers are generally scented, opening mid-afternoon and closing at dusk.

The leaf bodies in picture are taller than in some plants, the smooth skins on their semi-circular tops rounded more on the outsides than along the central slits. Leaf and window colour varies much among plants, and even in the same plant over time as conditions change.

Among the leaf debris in picture a couple of enduring old, dry fruit capsules can be recognised. The one still retains enough valve material to count five of them (Frandsen, 2017; Williamson, 2010; iNaturalist; https://www.livingdesertplants.co.za).
