Lithops bromfieldii var. mennellii is a dwarf succulent. Above ground it shows a few pairs of branched, cone-shaped and flat-topped leaves fused to each other at the base. The tops are rough with wrinkles of tiny, irregular maroon valleys among beige ridges. Other than the beige, leaf colour may vary from pinkish to creamy grey or slightly green.
Around the leaf pairs the remains of the previous leaves’ dried and papery outer membranes can be seen, serving as a form of protective clothing for the young leaves during their growth season (Smith, et al, 1998; www.cactus-art.biz).
