Lithops bromfieldii var. mennellii

The flower of Lithops bromfieldii var. mennellii has yellow petals, varying in shade. Once the flower is fully open, some white can be seen inside it at the base around the central column of stamens and styles. Flowers arise solitary from the fissure between the leaf pairs. Flowering happens in autumn. Flowers only open in the afternoon and close at dusk. The fruit capsules that will follow have five locules. The seeds are yellow-brown and wrinkled.

Six fleshy, erect and slightly hairy sepals with rounded tips envelop the creamy yellow young petals here that will open soon into a double whorled corolla for each flower. Some leaf succulence can be seen to be sacrificed in feeding the inflorescences that take precedence (Smith, et al, 1998; www.cactus-art.biz).
