Lessertia frutescens calyx shine

The patch of bright red on the calyx of Lessertia frutescens sometimes outshines the corolla of the open flower below, darker than the petals. There is less hairiness at the base of the calyx where it shines most, the stubbly hairs more prevalent on the brownish sepal lobes, triangularly shaped and short compared to the basal cup.

The banner petal, standard or vexillum has curled-back margins that lose their colour sooner than the straight, pointed keel below it.

The bigger, older stem part in picture is longitudinally ridged, the whitish hairs on it quite short (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2015; Manning, 2007; iNaturalist).
