Ledebouria marginata transversal leaf bands

The broad transversal purple bands across the leaf surfaces on this specimen of Ledebouria marginata give yet another example of this plant’s protean qualities. Three sturdy flower stalks snake out from among the leaves, curving variously and laden with flowers morphing into fruit or dropping off, as can be seen happening already. It is common for Ledebouria to produce multiple racemes per bulb.

The habitat seen here is rocky, sandy grassland. When the spring flowers of this plant emerge, there may already be considerable daytime heat and higher night temperatures, while the rain often stays out until the plant is well into its flowering cycle.
