Leucospermum reflexum var. luteum flowerhead in its prime

Halfway through flowering, the Leucospermum reflexum var. luteum head has some closed florets still at the top. They are covered in their perianths, while others have bare style parts starting to protrude or becoming fully freed from the perianth at the bottom of the head.

Blooming happens from the end of winter to early summer. The plants may last as long as twenty years.

Cape sugarbirds and sunbirds are important in the pollination of the species (Manning, 2009; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; http://pza.sanbi.org).
