Leucadendron uliginosum male flowerheads

Male cones or flowerheads of Leucadendron uliginosum grow in branched, stem-tip clusters (on male plants). The involucral leaves below the cones are pale yellow to ivory, slightly bigger than the plant’s other leaves. Male flowerheads become about 1,5 cm wide.

Flowering happens from midspring to midsummer. The photo was taken in January in the Langkloof.

The small leaves of L. uliginosum are oblong to elliptic, tapering to acutely pointed tips. They are silvery or silky from a covering of fine hairs. The leaves become from 2 cm to 3,5 cm long (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2015; Manning, 2007; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; iNaturalist).
