Indigofera species occur naturally in many diverse settings on all continents, mostly in tropical and semi-tropical regions. Some are or have been important in the manufacturing of medicines, among other things to produce painkillers.

The fruits of these plants belonging to the Fabaceae or legume family, are borne in pods similar to those of beans or peas, as seen in the photo. These pods may be broad or narrow.
