The stalkless or nearly stalkless leaves of Indigofera brachystachya are imparipinnate, meaning they are composite, comprising two or three pairs of narrow leaflets as well as a terminal one.

The leaflets are oblong to wedge-shaped, folding in along their midribs. The leaflet tips are pointed, rounded or notched and their margins rolled under. Leaflet colour is green to blue-green, sometimes with dark red colouring near the upper margins. The covering of silky leaflet hairs is short on the upper surfaces, dense and grey below (Manning, 2007; Bean and Johns; 2005; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; iSpot).
