Jamesbrittenia kraussiana is in Afrikaans commonly known as kerriebos (curry bush), a name associated with other plants as well. It was previously scientifically called Sutera kraussiana and Chaenostoma kraussianum among other names. The plant is a slender perennial reaching heights from 15 cm to 60 cm. The much-branched stems are soft high up, leafy and glandular hairy.

The species distribution is in the southeast of South Africa, coastally in the east of the Eastern Cape from East London to the south of KwaZulu-Natal as far as the Mfolozi River.

The habitat is mostly forest margins, grassland and thicket, from the coast to 800 m above sea level. The habitat population is deemed of least concern early in the twenty first century.

The species features in traditional medicine (Pooley, 1998; iNaturalist; http://redlist.sanbi.org).
