Lachenalia xerophila is a bulbous perennial. The specific epithet, xerophila, is derived from the Greek words xeros meaning dry and philos meaning loving, referring to the dry terrain where the plants flourish.

The species distribution is in the Northern Cape. The photo was taken in the Bushmanland.

The habitat is semi-arid and arid scrub, the plants growing in the open in sandy soils. The species is not considered to be threatened in its habitat early in the twenty first century (iNaturalist; http://redlist.sanbi.org).
