The sea rose, teringbos in Afrikaans, belongs to the Gentianaceae family. It is a Western Cape coastal shrublet that withstands the salt spray and brackish coastal soil. It shows resilience in the dry summers when it manages to flower boldly amidst the brown surroundings of many other plants forced to wilt under the hot sun and no rain relief.

The photograph was taken in Kirstenbosch.
