The strap-shaped leaves of Hypoxis hemerocallidea are borne in three vertical ranks, appearing above-ground annually before the flowers. The leaves taper gradually to acutely pointed tips, angling and curving outwards. Leaf surfaces are longitudinally channelled and sparsely hairy, the margins fringed densely with hairs.
There seems to be form variability in this plant, some having narrower leaves that ascend steeply as in the photo taken in Kirstenbosch, others are more broad-leaved and spreading (Manning, 2009; Van Wyk and Malan, 1997; www.plantzafrica.com).
