An old Ficus sycomorus tree in the right setting can be a majestic sight. Spotted in the Mjejane Game Reserve by the Crocodile River this one has made much of its opportunities.

Many plants, even trees have come and gone in its time. Many animals have watched the scene here while biting a leaf, chewing a cud or stalking prey. Many birds have sat in its branches while scouting food prospects, calling a mate or defecating on what is below, while absorbed in bird thought.

And many people have paused here on their game drive to find the animal spotted by a mate, or child in the back seat; or just to stare at what will be so sorely missed next week at work.

A few years ago there was no game reserve here.

What is the most significant event ever to have taken place by this tree? The past holds many more secrets than are divulged by history as warped by its recorders. For stories are passed on.

On the far bank is the Kruger National Park.
