The Goegap Nature Reserve near the Namaqualand town of Springbok is home to 45 mammal species including springbok, gemsbok, Hartmans zebra, bat-eared fox and aardwolf. There are about 94 bird species living in or visiting the Reserve, starting with the ostriches and the black eagle.
About 600 plant species grow on the 7000 hectares of the Reserve, including Aloe khamiesensis seen here planted at the gate. Spring flowering is the renowned, main event when visitor numbers peak here but also in the region overall. The Carolusberg is a prominent feature, the highest point in the Reserve at 1344 m.
Hiking, cycling, horse riding and 4X4 options enhance sightseeing by driving around in the Reserve. Many and unpredictable sightings of natural treasures unfold before the visitor among the rockery-like klipkoppe (rock heads) and sandy flats, all year round.
The Hester Malan Succulent Garden presents interesting plant species for inspection at close quarters. The Reserve is managed by the Department of Environment and Nature Conservation of the Northern Cape.
