A surprise awaits when discovering how Namaqualand children draw trees: Their tree archetype is shaped by local content, as it should be. Few draw the lush green crowns commonly expected from children living in parts where rainfall is high and many kinds of trees abound as models.

More limb than stem, the branchings often made dichotomous and then abrupt, thick endings against the sky dominate on paper as in minds. Leaves may be included, or rather added; awkwardly tacked on as afterthoughts protruding. Or none are considered necessary in their creations at all, as its all about the stems here.

Now you draw a quiver tree!
