    Stem thickening plays havoc with neat, vertical split lines on younger quiver tree stems, the borders between ochre yellow outer and grey inner bark. Lifting and curling of the random pieces leave patterns typical of tree growth stages.

    The smooth bits are smoother than most trees, the rough parts surprise in the rigidity of their defensive capacity.
