A long life marked by achievement can be lived in unfavourable conditions by the strong and determined; also by trees meriting the respect of those capable of recognising accomplishment.
This unenviable bare patch on a steep slope was the hand dealt to this Aloidendron dichotomum in its homeland, the Quiver Tree Forest. It did all that can be expected of a tree positioned in adversity: reaching heights and the concomitant proportions of mature growth as achieved by the fortunate.
Many thousands, probably millions of seeds have moved from its stem-tips over the years. Most did not become trees, but fed hungry animals or became the dust new plants grew from. That’s how things work in the world of plants and life is good.
This tree’s legacy will include a modified spot on earth from which several plant species will grow, maybe a quiver tree or two as well. Some small animals will be housed in the luxurious tunnels left by its departing roots. The branches will decay peacefully on the land of its ancestors or be carried away for use by something or somebody alive in days to come.
