The narrow-leaved Crassula nudicaulis var. nudicaulis also grows near Caledon. In the veld beyond the Wild Flower Garden this small plant has already flowered in at least two separate warm seasons of the past.
Life has its challenges here in the form of exposed stone and no rain in summer, or very little of it. Life’s rewards? Elbow or branching room with only moss and lichen as perennial partners. A bigger bush close by might provide shade and allow for greener leaves but crowding that escalates to suffocation won’t be fun (Curtis-Scott, et al, 2020; Smith, et al, 2017; iNaturalist).
