The rigid, arching branches of the mopaniegranaat (mopane pomegranate) as Rhigozum zambesiacum is commonly known in Afrikaans, are festooned in bright yellow flowers by spring rain.

The petals are joined in the two-lipped corollas, broadly tubular with crinkled lobes. The shape is reminiscent of jacaranda flowers with whom they share the family name of Bignoniaceae (Coates Palgrave, 2002; Van Wyk and Van Wyk, 1997).
