Aspalathus kougaensis, sometimes called the misunderstood Capegorse and previously scientifically A. chortophila subsp. kougaensis, is an erect or spreading shrub variable in height from 20 cm to 2 m, rarely 4 m.
The species distribution is in the Western Cape from the eastern Little Karoo to the Eastern Cape in the Langkloof, the Kouga and the adjacent coastal region to Humansdorp. The photo was taken in the Kouga Valley.
The habitat is rocky sandstone slopes in fynbos and renosterveld. The species is not considered to be threatened in its habitat early in the twenty first century (Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; JSTOR; iNaturalist; http://redlist.sanbi.org).
