Aspalathus hystrix, sometimes commonly called porcupine Capegorse, is a conspicuously silver-haired shrub reaching heights from 1 m to 3 m.
The distribution is in the Western Cape, mainly the Little Karoo from Ladismith to Willowmore and over the Swartberg Mountains into the Great Karoo to Laingsburg.
The habitat is arid slopes of fynbos, renosterveld and the transition area or ecotone between the two. The species is not considered to be threatened in its habitat early in the twenty first century (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2015; JSTOR; iNaturalist; http://redlist.sanbi.org).
