The beginnings of the cluster of stem-tip fruit pods of Aspalathus crenata in picture show the prominence of the calyces over the back ends of the pods. The calyx lobes are long and thin from the rim of the cup. The pods are flat at this stage, tipped with the persistent styles. The calyces may turn redder than the ones in the photo before they wither (Manning, 2009; Bean and Johns, 2005; Burman and Bean, 1985; iNaturalist).
