Aptosimum procumbens flowers

The trumpet-shaped flower of Aptosimum procumbens becomes up to 2 cm long and 1,5 cm wide. On the plant in the photo the dark areas on the petals just outside the throat of the corolla are black in their centres or nearly so. Others sometimes have bright to dark blue markings here. These blotches change shade on the flowers shown here: they become dark blue towards the outside and mesh with the dark veins on the white surface on the inside, the straight lines that run to the base of the corolla tube.

The corolla lobes are rounded to flat-tipped. The hairy exterior of this flower’s corolla can be observed on the yet unopened buds in the photo.

The leaves of A. procumbens are described as paddle-shaped or spoon-shaped. Jagged sections on the margins occur where the leaves are at their widest. Leaf tips are acutely pointed, tapering gradually at the base.

Leaf margins are whitish around the blue-green blades that show midribs, but not lateral veining (Manning, 2009; Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2010).
