Asclepias macropus umbel

This Asclepias macropus umbel was photographed near Giants Castle in the Drakensberg. The plant is commonly known as the tailed cartwheel.

The numerous small flowers have their five pointed, dull-brown corolla lobes very far reflexed, nearly against their straight, stout, pale green pedicels. The five yellow corona lobes are angled up and outwards, compressed laterally.

The anthers have two locules, the pollinia ellipsoidal (Leistner, (Ed.), 2000; Pooley, 1998; iNaturalist).
