The tiny, heart-shaped leaves of Adenandra brachyphylla grow stalkless in a pattern around the stems. The specific name, brachyphylla, reflects something of the leaf-shape, the name derived from the Greek words brachy meaning short and phyllum meaning leaf.
Earlier recognised subspecies, subsp. heterophylla and subsp. glandulosa, are no longer upheld (Bean and Johns, 2005; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; Andrew, 2012; iNaturalist; iSpot; JSTOR).
