Asparagus densiflorus “Mazeppa”, commonly known as the emerald fern or basket fern, grows soft textured, arching stems covered in attractive “foliage” sought after by gardeners.
The recurved spines tend to remind those that come too close of their existence. The emerald green cladodes are oblong, ending abruptly in pointed tips. They grow in small groups, moderately spaced on the stems.
Numerous creamy white flower buds on notable pedicels are visible in picture on the plant photographed during March in Kirstenbosch. The flowers will open into star-shapes, followed by bright red berries (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2015; https://wildflowernursery.co.za).
