Adromischus maculatus often grows under or close to large shrubs. The benefit is partial shade and some protection from being trampled by passers-by.

It appears sandy, rocky and very dry around these plants. They bear evidence of having flowered during the previous summer. The winter rain is still awaited by all ready for growing leaves or eating them.

Wherever a plant spends its life there is risk. It does not have to be told about urgency, as the setting of seed during every flowering season is a natural priority.

The photo was taken in renosterveld near Montagu during March.
