Adromischus caryophyllaceus

Adromischus caryophyllaceus, in Afrikaans commonly known as nentabossie (little nenta bush), is a perennial, multi-stemmed succulent growing to about 35 cm when in flower. Its branches may be erect or decumbent.

The tubular flowers of about 2 cm in length open into five-lobed corollas. The corolla has bright pink or purple lines down the centre of each lobe into the throat.

The species distribution lies in the Western Cape from Hermanus and Worcester, the southern Cape coastal area and the Little Karoo to about Uniondale.

It grows best in the shade of bigger shrubs found in big parts of this region, like spekboom (Portulacaria afra), guarri (Euclea undulata) or renosterbos (Elytropappus rhinocerotis). The species is not considered to be threatened in its habitat early in the twenty first century (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2010; JSTOR; www.redlist.sanbi.org).
