Crassothonna capensis forming a carpet

The leaves of this Crassothonna capensis plant are borne erectly while the stems creep to form a large, low-growing mat. Blue-grey young leaves soon change colour to a dark green as they age, or may redden from stress. The leaves have earned the plant the common name of little pickles and in Afrikaans bobbejaankool (baboon cabbage).

The flowerheads are yellow as is common, although white flowerheads are also seen. Flowerheads are held well above the foliage on stalks that sometimes branch and may present two flowers. The flowerhead buds may be violet coloured, spherical in shape.

Some whitish fruits can be seen in the photo, although it is just the beginning of the mainly winter blooming season. The photo was taken in May (Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; Wikipedia).
