Colchicum coloratum subsp. coloratum busy inflorescence

Anthers of several Colchicum coloratum subsp. coloratum flowers in different stages of their growth cycle are in view in the photo. They range from fully rounded in pink fleshiness or yellow-brown and hood-shaped to shrivelled brown and thinly contorted or having lost some parts.

Some filament tips are bare where the anthers have dropped off, leaving only the narrowly cone-shaped, fleshy bodies standing for the moment. Colchicum filaments are thick below due to their swollen, nectar-secreting bases.

The scene resembles the end of a rowdy celebration or meeting where events have taken their toll and some have lost their heads. Some of the headless ones may be styles topped with very small stigmas (Manning, 2009; Manning and Goldblatt, 1997; iNaturalist).
