    Cephalophyllum rigidum flowers

    Cephalophyllum rigidum flowers
    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Judd Kirkel Welwitch

The stalked flowers of Cephalophyllum rigidum grow solitary from stem tips. The petals spread, angling up slightly over the five sepals. The petals in the photo are two-tone, the pale colouring from the base darkens into a light coppery tone near the rounded tips. Some of the shiny, membranous petals show longitudinal veins. The flowers may also be magenta.

A large cluster of stamens in the flower centre ends in tiny anthers that for the moment form a loose, dark ring over the flower centre. Lower than the stamens and out of sight, the feathery stigmas in the flower base are surrounded by nectar glands.

The fruit capsules are typical of the Cephalophyllum genus, the number of locules variable between ten and twenty-four (Smith, et al, 1998; iNaturalist; https://www.worldfloraonline.org).
