A Combretum apiculatum subsp. apiculatum tree is a delightful sight when flowering before the new foliage, at the onset of spring when the veld gets hotter.

The tiny florets growing close together in fluffy spikes may sometimes be cream-green. The florets each has four or five minute petals and twice as many stamens, exserted far. The spikes may occur in clusters of up to four at a node or axil (Coates Palgrave, 2002; Schmidt, et al, 2002; Leistner, (Ed.), 2000; iNaturalist).
