The old stems of Combretum apiculatum subsp. apiculatum are brown or various shades of grey, particularly dark near the base of large trees. The texture of the bark becomes increasingly rough as it fissures and flakes with age. Under-bark exposed as rectangular pieces drop off is pale grey to buff coloured. Coppice shoots have finer bark texture, greyish in colour (Carr, 1988; Coates Palgrave, 2002).
