    The young Crassula subaphylla var. subaphylla stems and branches may be red, brown, orange or purple, occasionally even yellow-green right near the tips. There is initially mostly a faint hair covering on the stems.

    Old stems are slightly woody and hairless, although fairly thin and still wiry. The stems become longitudinally striped and the thin bark peels from the now largely dull brown to greyish stems. Old stem parts also tend to become leafless (Smith, et al, 2017; iNaturalist).
