This big fly, motivated by hunger, is fulfilling its community service role of pollinating Crassula tecta flowers. As lunch is the reciprocal part of the deal, it is more like earning its living, no free lunch anywhere. Every one of its six feet in or on a different flower while poking its proboscis into yet another, there is every opportunity of gathering and depositing pollen as it moves.

The sturdy stalk of the flower cluster not only supports the flowers, also upholds the flying visitors choosing to land while the flowers last. Hence the appropriately robust design. Evolution doesn't think of everything, it allows appropriate designs to live longer and reproduce. And strength of materials and structures isn’t only an engineering issue, it is an outcome of continuous adaptation in nature.
