Conophytum flavum subsp. flavum with fruit capsule

The fruit capsule of Conophytum flavum subsp. flavum dries out before the valves on the six locules eventually open and the tiny seeds are released. There may be from four to seven of these locules at the top of the capsule in the case of this species. The capsule is small, positioned just above the rounded, succulent leaf-pair.

The leaves are pale grey-green and paired in a kidney-shaped here, forming a shallow bowl. Tiny slits occur on each leaf surface near the middle. There may be dark green spots on the leaves as well as fine whitish mottling, but no hairs. The leaves multiply in mature plants into small flat clumps or mats (iSpot; www.cactus-art.biz).
