Conophytum ectypum

These flowers of Conophytum ectypum show white colouring on the lower halves of their sagging petals. Towards the tips the petals are pink-purple. Compare the other photo of another Conophytum ectypum plant that has straight, younger petals, and lacking the white lower sections.

The pale yellow anthers are visible near the top of the corolla tube, not exserted. The quite ruined appearance of the leaf bodies from which the flowers emerge, are normal: this is what is left of the skins of last year’s leaves, hiding the emergent young leaves that will eventually push the husks away after the autumn flowers are gone. The winter rain has stimulated new growth (Smith, et al, 1998; iSpot).
