The flowering of a mature Othonna quinquedentata plant can be an unusual sight in the fynbos, yellow daisies bouncing about in all directions, chased on their long stalks by the wind.

Still, the plant is not too likely to become a gardener’s favourite, too big and rich in spaces with more chance of being noticed in the veld. It easily goes unnoticed, until the remarkable inflorescences arrive high above the surrounding vegetation.

The plants may proliferate on disturbed land as pioneers, only to lose prominence later as other vegetation recovers (Manning, 2007; Bean and Johns, 2005; iSpot).
