Othonna perfoliata leaf appearance is both unmistakable and variable across the plant’s geographical distribution. Differences do not confuse when the definitive characteristics are so clearly in evidence, merely varying in the manner of accentuation.
The soft, fleshy grey-green leaf surfaces undulate variably, the margins turned down or rolled under. The elaborate basal lobes of the stalkless leaf surround the stem.
Heart-shape is a common descriptor for such leaves, but the extravagant lobes present here suggest a heart filled with effusive, smothering love not quite to be welcomed, especially if the suspicious-looking twist to the left in the sharp point at the other end is considered.
In Afrikaans you say: “Jy is my hart se punt!” when you want to tell someone of a particular soft spot you have for him or her; the literal translation being: You are my heart’s tip.
