Othonna macrophylla old inflorescence

The lax branching or forking of an Othonna macrophylla inflorescence holds the panicle of heads in position for the duration of fruiting until seed dispersal. The rays are presently curled up but still showing orange to yellow colouring.

Each seed forming inside will be crowned by a pappus, a ring of bristles facilitating flying on the wind once the fruit is free to go. The bulging bracts of the flowerhead involucre, only one row of them, are purple near their tips, resembling a pack of Vienna sausages, although the green below would be off-putting to shoppers.

The tiny, underdeveloped heads present lower down in the panicle may be for later in the season, or they never made it in recessionary business conditions.

The leafy bracts present at the branch bases in the panicle are small, narrow and pointed (iNaturalist; JSTOR).
