The carnival bush or fynblaarrooihout in Afrikaans and umbomvane in Zulu, is usually a shrub, occasionally a tree (SA Tree List No. 479.1). The yellow flowers are attractive, but the striking red persistent sepals that spread like wings above the greenish, white and eventually black fruit may contribute even more towards this plants introduction into gardens (Coates Palgrave, 2002).
