Various stages of flower opening are present in this spike of Orthochilus chloranthus flowers. Some yellowish colouring is managed when they are open, but green seems often to remain as the prevailing flower colour.
A twist in the ovary of these resupinate flowers can be observed, causing the lip to be presented at the flower base, the median sepal turned to the top, where it warrants the name of dorsal sepal.
The flowers in the photo display their stubby spurs, each bulging down from a lip base (www.africanorchids.dk).
