Orthochilus vinosus is a low-growing or dwarf terrestrial orchid. The plant used to be called Eulophia vinosa, but was moved into Orthochilus around 2014, from a split of the Eulophia genus necessary for grouping plants according to common ancestry. The leaves are only beginning to develop when these plants bloom.

The distribution lies in parts of Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal, where the plants grow in open highveld and montane grassland. The species is often found among granitic or sandstone rocks at elevations between 1200 and 1800 m. The status of the population in habitat is unknown (iSpot; www.orchidspecies.com).
