Kanna or kougoed has for long been a popular Cape plant for other reasons than the appearance of its flowers. It is said to produce pleasurable mood alteration. A remarkable range of desirable effects are reportedly induced by Mesembryanthemum tortuosum; among them euphoria, sexual response, appetite suppression, sedation and vivid dreaming.
It is not clear how the dried plant material was used, also chewed or possibly smoked (Wikipedia).
