    The dark marks at the base of the ray florets are concealed here in the half-open Osteospermum monstrosum flowerhead. Its pale-yellow rays are short and broad, curving back at their tips.

    Some disc florets of the outer ring have opened, becoming orange. The tiny, closed buds in the centre are still black.

    Small, alternate stem-leaves with purple-red tips ascend up the stem, dark green and hairy (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2010; Manning, 2007; Le Roux, et al, 2005; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; iNaturalist).
