Manulea platystigma

This Manulea platystigma inflorescence is partly developed and still-flat-topped in the photo. As the raceme lengthens, the flowers spread more evenly and well separated up its length. The petal lobes are strongly recurved on the flowers seen here.

One wonders whether the insect in picture has the wherewithal for reaching the nectar at the base of the corolla tube. Some that cant reach, have learnt how to pierce the corolla, a practice that may not be ideal from a pollination point of view.

The leaves, calyx and fleshy stem are covered in short, whitish hairs. The calyx has five pointed lobes around the base of the corolla tube (iSpot; JSTOR).
